Mad Men Yourself

The promo people at AMC are if full flow for the third season of Mad Men that begins on August 16th. I for one am super psyched about this new season especially as I just finished rewatching season 2 the other day. One of the items on the offiical wbsite is that you can 'Mad Men' yourself, choosing what 1960s hair, clothing and extras that you might want, here is what mine looks like:

Chuck at Comic Con 2009

Another TV panel that I would have love to been present at was the Chuck panel, which seemed to feature almost all the main cast and from what I have seen was a very fun panel to be at. This post will be a lot briefer than my Lost one, but what I really wanted to add was the Jeffster performance that opened the panel, with an awesome rendition of Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls.

Not much was revealed about the next season, althought they did announce that a new Chuck website www.chuckmeout.com has been launched to hopefully entertain fans during the super long hiatus.

Lost at Comic Con 2009

I’ve just been looking through many of the reports from Comic Con regarding the final Lost panel for season 6 and as with the previous years this gave some minor revelations for the upcoming season as well as being fun and featuring some of the cast as well as Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. The theme of this years panel was fan appreciation to show the 6000 strong audience and those of us who could not be there but only watch on Youtube (thanks to those fans who recorded and uploaded their videos so quickly) how much they have appreciated the support over the past five years. I particularly enjoyed the mash up of fan videos, including one of my favourites being ‘Brokeback Island’:

There were several other videos that played, several of which suggest that the plane never crashed, including one with Hurley advertising Mr Cluck’s Chicken, an Oceanic Air promo highlighting what a safe airline that they are and a video from America’s Most Wanted revealing that Kate did not kill her step father but one of his employees by mistake. These videos suggest that the plane did not crash and that Jacks plan worked after all, how much of this is just a big tease is anyone’s guess really. Other humorous videos included Michael Emerson auditioning for the role of Hurley and seeing Nestor Carbonell applying eyeliner backstage.

Important bits of information that were revealed during the panel include:

-Both Faraday and Juliet will appear in season 6 (at the Vampire Diaries panel Ian Somerhalder confirmed that he would also be reprising his role of Boone at some point)

-There will be a lot of Richard Alpert including his back story (it was confirmed but not at this panel that he will appear in 16 out of the 18 episodes making him a season regular which makes me super happy)

-It will mirror season 1 in tone (ambiguous but in true Lost style)

-Jacob has never appeared as another character

-There will be less emphasis on the Dharma Initiative

Not too much revealed but enough to start to wet my appetite, and considering it won’t be on air for six months I think it is better to get small pieces of information at this stage.

The panel which by the end of it had Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Michael Emerson (Ben), Nestor Carbonell (Richard) and Josh Holloway (Sawyer) on stage ended with an in memoriam clip montage of all the major characters in Lost who have died:

This was followed by the final surprise guest- Dominic Monaghan who on his hand had written ‘Am I alive?’ This all but confirms that he will be appearing in season 6 which I am very happy about as he was always my favourite. In an interview later on for G4 Jorge Garcia confirmed this, although the look on Michael Emerson’s face would suggest that he probably was not meant to.

-The whole panel can be viewed here at docartz.com and the quality is pretty super

-The New York Times has written a piece on the extensive prep time for the Lost Comic Con panel and is well worth a read and can be found here

-As always for really good Lost coverage you should head over to EW.com, Doc Jensen and Dan Snierson covered both the Lost panel and hosted their own panel for Totally Lost that featured Michael Emerson and Gregg Nations (who is a co-producer on Lost).

Graduation and what is to come

So, I finally had my graduation ceremony for my Masters in Film and Television which turned out to be a fun afternoon, not only because I got to catch up with some old faces but also because the person who was awarded an honorary degree was the BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner. Gardner was reporting in Saudi Arabia in 2004 when he and his cameraman Simon Cumbers were fired upon by al-Qaeda sympathisers, Cumbers was killed and Gardner who was shot six times was left paralysed. He gave a speech that gave hope to the many graduates in the room and showed that you can achieve your dreams as well as overcome obstacles that are presented to us, no matter how big or small. Here is a picture of me (and my Dad) from the day

It is also odd to think that this time last year I was hard at work with my dissertation which the topic of my study was whether authorship in television is viable and if it is then by what means. My case study was JJ Abrams and I was looking at his body of work in television with the cut off for all Fringe related research being Comic Con. The fact that it is Comic Con this weekend and that it was my graduation last week brings my Masters to a close. On that note I have several things that I would like to write about in the next week or so and I aim to be more productive with this blog throughout the summer as I have been a little absent recently.

Areas that I would like to cover include:

-Reviewing the short lived sitcom Kitchen Confidential which I have just finished watching on DVD.

-The news and highlights from Comic Con, I wish I was there but unfortunately I will be scanning Entertainment Weekly and fan sites such as obsessedwithbones.com and chucktv.net for all the weekends’ gossip

-I just read a review in the New York Times for the Nathan Rabin book ‘The Big Rewind: A Memoir Bought to you by Pop Culture’. Rabin who is now a writer for the Onion writes about his turbulent growing up through pop culture references and from what I have heard this book sounds super and I definitely want to read it (right after I finish with the Dead Zone).

-I’m also currently re-watching season 2 of Mad Men which I got on DVD last week, in preparation for the new season and also because it is truly wonderful TV. The new promo poster for season 3 has been released and makes me so excited for this new season:

-I would like to look at this years Emmy nominations and watch some more of the drama nominees as I currently only watch Mad Men, Dexter and Lost out of the list, really want to check out Breaking Bad and Damages (which my Mum loves and the first season is super cheap to buy at the moment). But also a big grr to Friday Night Lights getting snubbed again in the major categories, what has this show got to do to get some Emmy love?

So, I will be writing a lot more soon, also I have had a guest review of the season 1 Bones episode ‘The man in the fallout shelter’ posted on www.obsessedwithbones.com and will have another one coming soon as I also wrote about ‘The man with the bone’.

The Daily Show

The Daily Show is on a weeks holiday so instead of new episodes to watch I have taken to the archive on the shows website to watch some classic Daily Show videos which feature old correspondent favourites including Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Ed Helms and Rob Corddry. I can really spend hours getting lost on this site as I didn’t start watching the show until 2005 so I have much to see that I haven’t already. I wrote a paper for my Masters last year on the show and I found myself getting very distracted during the research time by the extensive video collection, I would be watching them in the library and try to stifle my laughter which I forgot to do on many occasions so I think I must’ve looked a little crazy to the other people sitting around me, but it was worth it. I wrote quite a bit on Rob Riggle’s trip to Iraq which was a very good short series that they did, similarly Jason Jones has just has his trip to Iran aired and is definitely worth checking out for both comedy and as a general human interest piece.

This montage of comedians that have visited The Daily Show is what prompted me to go and spend more time than I should in the video vault of The Daily Show:
